Wednesday Wives Tales~Persimmon Seeds

I finally got around to going out to scrounge for some persimmons. I think the 'possums must have eaten all of ours. Or the dogs. It's always a contest to see who or what creature can get there first. I went out early this morning in the rain and found~ONE persimmon.

If you cut open your persimmon seeds and see the shape of a fork, then you will have a nice, easy winter. A spoon and there will be lots of snow to shovel. A knife~cutting cold.

Our neighbors have reported spoons in their persimmon seeds and that is what we are calling the shape we found in ours. They are not as defined as usual, but there is definitely the little 'cup' part of a spoon. So, lots of snow for us! We had spoons in them last year and there was plenty of snow.
Have you seen any 'signs' about the coming winter?

  1. I have not had a persimmon in years. I can remember as a young girl picking them up off the ground from a tree on the side of the road near our house. The only winter signs I have seen around here are the wolly worms...They seem to be one color and that is dark brown. Old timers used to the Wolly Worm would foretell how server the Winter was going to be. Just not sure what color indicated what. Thanks for the memories....Blessings!

  3. I've heard of persimmon's but as far as I know never seen one or tasted one. I'm in Ohio, so snow snow snow every year since I've been here...it would really be a shock to have a mild winter!

  5. The weather forcasters predict lots of snow but so far beautiful Indian Summer. Snow is predicted next week. That is a bummer. I would not know a persimmon if I ran into one. Please read my blog and pray.

  7. That was very interesting, Rose Mary! I had never heard that about persimmon seeds...
We have seen a lot of woolly worms lately, and I can't remember what my grandmother used to say about them, but it has some meaning... the funny thing is I've found several in the chicken coops, and the chickens won't go near them! (Maybe they don't like the fuzzy aftertaste? haha)

I did see some woolyworms early in the fall, but I don't remember what they're supposed to mean... something about how far apart the brown and black stripes are, I think.

I've never heard that about the persimmons, but then again I don't know that I've ever even seen one!

  11. Cool.... I had never had persimmon pudding until I moved to this part of the state, where it seems to be more popular. I didn't really like it... do you?
