Wednesday Wives Tales~Happy New Year

Old-time mountain folks believed that New Year's Day was closely connected with what might be happening during the new year.

It is said that a woman who washes clothes on New Year's Day will have to work hard all year. Other's believe that if one doesn't get something of worth accomplished on that day, the entire year will be spent in an 'ildesome' stupor.

Its always been a tradition in my family to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day~as it is with everyone that I know. But, I found this little saying about it that I thought all of you might enjoy:
"On New Year's you just eat black-eyed peas, with a dime under your plate, an' wear a pair of red garters, an' you'll have good luck the whole year".

So all of you have a very Happy New Year's Day~and don't forget to eat your black-eyed peas! (And if you happen to have a pair of red garters....:)

  1. Hey there; I'm a new follower. I'm also a Midwest transplant from Texas. We too ate black-eyed peas and cornbread on New Year's Day. It has now become red beans and ham, but I'm well familiar with the 'pea' thing. Beans seem to do ok; now if I could only find those garters!

  3. No garters....but I will be eating my black-eyed peas and cabbage and pork....

Peas and cabbage are to bring in the money in the New Year. Pork because a pig roots "forward"...never eat chicken because they scratch backwards.

    Have a cozy day!☺

Happy New Year...and I hate black eye peas...must be part of my trouble..LOL

  7. So, that's where I've messed up... no red garters! We were always told we would get a dollar for every pea we ate that day... throughout the year... boy, did I try to eat some peas!!!

  8. Also, whatever you were doing when the new year came in, is what you would be doing a lot of, all year. I always make sure I'm asleep. LOL

  9. RM,
Well I might be in trouble, no red garter and I don't like black eyed peas. I do have a dime though.
Yes isn't that stuff from E'bay pretty interesting? I was pretty happy with that.

  10. Our tradition is to eat cabbage on new years day. When I was young, mom would put a silver dime in it. I think that was the only way she could get the kids to eat it, I didn't like cabbage when I was little. I love it now.

  11. Thank you all for your comments! I've never eaten cabbage on New Year's, but it sounds like a good thing to do, since I love eating it.

This year I'm going to try a black-eyed pea dip for New Year's. I'm hoping my youngest will eat it since she doesn't care for blackeyed peas. I told her she's what's been holding us back all these years:)

Like the rest of you, I'm outta luck when it comes to the red garters, LOL!
