Monday Morning Musings

We had our first real freezing temps last night. I'm afraid my petunias, tomatoes and summer squash are toast! It really wasn't supposed to get quite this cold, according to the weatherman. You would think I would know by now NOT to trust him.

Most years, my flowers don't freeze until the week before Thanksgiving, so I'm wondering if this is also a sign of a cold winter? We had over 10 heavy fogs in August, and my hubby's aunt reported that onions have unusually thick skins this year. We cut open a couple of persimmon seeds this weekend and they all have spoons~a sign of snow. It has been a while since we've had an especially cold winter, so I guess we are due one.
The chickens don't seem to mind the cool mornings. They are always anxious to be let out and start their daily hunt for bugs.
I found this metal chicken/rooster basket at the flea market last week. I think he is so cute!! He is out on my porch right now, but I'll be bringing him in for the winter. I'm looking forward to using him to decorate with all year round. I can see him with pine cones or Christmas balls in December. Then, maybe some little cloth hearts, followed by pretty eggs, then shamrocks, and on to some red, white, and blue for next summer!

  1. Good Morning. We are having some heat out here, it was 88 in Vegas yesterday. You chickens look so happy to be out and running around. I do miss mine sometimes. Have a nice week. Keep warm. Hard to believe that Halloween is Friday and I have that day off since its Nevada day. yippiee

  2. I slept late this morning - 7:30 - and it was 38° when I got up. Better bring some plants in tonight since it's supposed to get colder! We've had lots of mist on the lake this month too. I'm glad you said that about the persimmons. I keep hearing that it will be a hard winter so I guess we better get more wood. :) I love your chicken - what a great find! blessings, marlene

  3. RM,
We will probably get a hard freeze this week. Still lots of leaves on the trees hanging on for dear life.
    Love your little Chicken basket.

  4. I love your chicken basket. I will look so cute with all the things that you mention in it.

I hope it don't get too cold. My bones hurt me at my age if it get cold that lasts a while. But if it does I will just keep a little warmer. Sorry about your flowers and vegetables. connie

  7. Hi Rose Mary,
I love your little chicken basket! That is so cute with all those mini pumpkins ~ just adorable! We are having a cold snap down my way, too. They say 30's for the next couple of nights ~ it is unusual for here and this time of the year! I'm not ready for the cold yet! Take care, girl, and I hope you have a fun Halloween!!
    Lots of Hugs, Bebe :)

  8. It is cold here as well but I love the change of seasons and am enjoying the warmth of the wood stove and cozy quilts!

I didn't know that about permissions. How neat?

Your chicken basket is just perfect. Pine cones will look just great in it!

    Blessings & joy,

  9. Hi, Miss RoseMary!
Wow! I just love your chickens -- the real ones AND the metal one!
    They're beautiful!

You are so right about not being able to trust that weatherman!
I'm sorry if your plants died.

Those are really neat observations about whether we're in for a really cold winter, this year. We had a couple of freezing nights, but it's warmed back up -- not too bad, though.

    Many Blessings,
    Julie
